If I left work at night with this on my Discman, I could pretty much guarantee I’d be weirded out fast: cars seemed to drive slower, people seemed more suspicious, strange shit would happen. One time I arrived at my girlfriend’s around “Treefingers” to discover no one at the apartment but about a dozen giant flies swarming around (I’d never seen a single one before). After reaffirming there were no dead bodies at the cause, I got started swatting, trapping most of them with me in the bathroom for a deathmatch. By “Idioteque” I was in a full, ridiculous, Berserker state.
While it may not have blown the minds of Autechre fans (or even people who’d just heard of Autechre), Kid A really is bizarre and beautiful beyond what’s required of a group that had already milked light Pink Floyd and Bowie-isms into Best Band Alive By Default status. Have you seen the clips of them performing “Idioteque” and “The National Anthem” on SNL lately? Shit is nuts! What the hell is Johnny Greenwood doing over there? The only art rock band I’ve seen on TV since that I could imagine weirding out some nerd’s parents is recent Linkin Park. If they didn’t sound like 311 I’d be more impressed. And Radiohead doesn’t sound like 311 at all!
