I’m glad teen girls have a solid Bourne movie of their own, but I wish the stakes for the titular Hanna had been further developed, or at least acknowledged. Her father raised her with such a singularity of purpose that she’s basically a kamikaze killbot. Where Bourne looks forward to some r’n’r’n’romance after he Gets Some Answers, we don’t know what Hanna wants from life after she accomplishes her comparatively simple, dad-driven goal. I’m not sure exploring the pathos of her situation would have made for an inherently better movie, but Eric Bana and Saoirse Ronan seem like they could have handled it. And if it wasn’t for those empathetic leads, the film would just be an unusually tasteful Luc Besson homage. Not that that’s such a horrible thing.
