21. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, “Ohio” (So Far, 1974)
I’m not sure what the intent of these four millionaires was in the month between the Kent State shooting and the release of this single, but whether it was to flatter themselves with identification, stoke further outrage, offer angry kids an anthem, make some cash, rock cathartically, voice horror at military violence or suggest the murder of white students is more horrifying than any other, they did all of that and more. And, for all the pros and cons, I don’t know that they should have just let “Teach Your Children” sit on the charts for another month instead.
