32. Neil Young & Crazy Horse, “Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)” (Rust Never Sleeps, 1979)
The finale of my favorite Neil album is such a dramatic victory lap, such a gif of Will Ferrell screaming “THAT! JUST! HAPPENED!” that listening to it out of context feels like putting on Animal House and skipping straight to the riot. Thing is, even if “Into The Black” doesn’t make the top 32 Neil songs I’m apt to fling on my iPod, I can’t think of 32 more likely to inspire euphoric amazement when they’re on. I also can’t think of a guitar climax that better earns cornball descriptors like “searing, “buzzsaw,” and “hurts so good.” Lord knows I’ve been on the lookout.
