Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Maps”
My time waiting for an eye appointment yesterday was soundtracked by many “nu-wave” hits of the early ’00s, including “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine,” “Such Great Heights,” “Somewhere Only We Know” and this ballad a Jason Reitman movie will dramatically re-bring to our cultural attention sometime in the next decade. Hopefully, by the time this song turns 10 next year (I know!), I will have found a better name for this indie crossover moment than “nu-wave.” While it feels appropriate - now that the moment has passed this music feels almost as cute and alien as new wave itself - you really can’t use it in conversation without spelling the prefix out.
