Anthony’s Tips For Awesome Music Videos #1: If you’re going to be filmed playing your song, show off your technique!
It never hurts for a rock band to draw attention to the awesome things they’re doing with their hands in music videos. Like, if we hear a hand slide down a guitar, show a hand sliding down a guitar. Match on action! Granted, if the band sounds like mush there isn’t much to highlight, but Eddie Van Halen in his heyday always let you get up close and personal with his fretwork, in part because it makes the actual playing of a guitar look more fun than wide-shots of flailing do. It’s an easy road to guitar hero status! Even Michel “I Heart Puzzles” Gondry isn’t above exploiting it, as proven above*, where the bass-work looks as interesting as bassist. And since most videos these days are just bands playing in airport hangars and abandoned warehouses and whatnot, it’s stupid not to take advantage of the action.
*Actually the video was co-directed by Dean Karr, whose work suggests he was probably the one shooting the tasty licks while Michel added the goofy deer crap. But still!
